Forum on Poverty

On the 17th of October 2009, DASE Development Organization conducted a forum on Poverty (“Gharib Nai Ghurbat Mukao”) at Union Council Office with the support of AWAZ CDS for the analyzing causal condition of Poverty. Many peoples of the community are present at the forum. It was very different Forum because DASE has take on proper strategy for such type of awareness base Forum. DASE feel that Debates are also violence so DASE adopted a fully interactive strategy in the shape of theater and showing gesture. The Forum was held during world Anti-Poverty Week (Stand up against Poverty) and participants were belong to peak community non-government organizations and posted on the anti-poverty week. This report is intended to provide an overview of the points raised at the Forum; it is not a detailed record of discussions.



Aim
The aim of the Poverty Forum was to inform the public about the initiative and to facilitate the exchange of ideas with members of the community on the poverty issues.

Outcomes
It was intended that the Forum enable participants to have:
An understanding of the general issues surrounding poverty
An understanding of the proposed poverty alleviation initiative
An opportunity to contribute to discussions on the development and poverty

Purpose of the This Forum was to

The purpose of the 17 October 2009 Poverty Forum was to determine the way forward on the national Poverty Alleviation framework accordingly MDGs in Pakistan. This document provides an overview and is divided into three sections. Section One describes the purpose, participants and synthesis of key points from the presentations and discussion. Section Two provides the two keynote community speeches.
This Forum discussed social protection in relation to poverty reduction in the global development agenda. It deliberated on Pakistan.

Methodology:
The Forum was opened by Dr. Aslam Joiya,( Head of Management) DASE Development Organization who began by talking about the importance of GCAP for providing support to the Poverty Eradication or stand up to community against Poverty by preparation of such type of Forum. The key point from his opening speech was to explain community cooperation and Government Role for Poverty Alleviation and also emphasized the overall objective of the Forum to deliberate on strategic issues and reach a consensus on the best way forward in developing a national framework for achieving MDGs. Mr Rana Shabir was stage secretary of the forum and facilitate to all program. Mr. Ghulam Gillani managed all the program.

The second key note speech, profiling Poverty Alleviation by Together Grow was provided by Mr. Munir Sherazi (Program Manager DASE). Mr. Sherazi emphasised that we can be alleviate Poverty by cooperating to each others, he also said that the economic development are mutually reinforcing, and like any other policy areas Poverty Alleviation involves choices and priorities given resource constraint.


Theatre was also performed by representatives from SOJHLA (for social change) a well know social theatre group of Dist Multan. They perform a excellent theatre and raise some questions which effected the emotions of the people and involved the people into discussion. Many people involved in this discussion process and gave much suggestion for government.



DASE Demand
DASE believed that Poverty proofing is a process by which government agencies assess policies, strategies and programs at design and review stages in relation to the likely impact they will have on poverty and on inequalities that are likely to lead to poverty. The poverty proofing assessment strategy will play a crucial supporting role in addressing poverty, but does not by itself constitute an effective anti-poverty strategy.

Conclusion
Participants at the Forums contributed valuable ideas in Forum on how best to progress the issues of community inclusion in relation to the poverty alleviation.
There was general consensus that access to affordable housing, and services and transport were major factors in overcoming social exclusion and poverty. In addition, Forum participants noted the potential role of the organization for awareness rising. It should also focus on issues around poverty that cause community exclusion.
All participants sign on the petition for Prime Minister in which they stress to government for the attaining millennium Development Goals and start proper mechanism for achieving MDGs.

At the end of the Forum all participants stand up against Poverty and also raise hand and appeal to Government for the eradicating Poverty in Pakistan.
